Nearly
all my acting work has been in the theatre, and all the projects with
which I've been happiest in my career have been on stage.

The work with which I'm proudest to be associated is that of the playwright Howard Barker, from my first exposure
to it at the Almeida Theatre in a rehearsed reading directed by Ian
McDiarmid, through the Barker Season organised by the Royal Shakespeare
Company at the Barbican Pit, to the national and international tours
with the Wrestling School, the company formed specifically to perform
Howard's work: highlights included the Odeon in Paris, the Metaphor
in Lille and the Kanonenhalle in Copenhagen as well as the Royal Court
and Riverside Studio theatres in London.

I
was also involved for a long time with the Brighton-based company
Good Company, on a piece called 'I Bertolt Brecht',
about the life and work of the German poet and dramatist, devised
and directed by Sue Pomeroy. I was twice on national tour with it,
then in London at the New End and Cockpit theatres, and even
played Brecht's own theatre in Berlin, the Schiffbauerdammtheater,
as guest of the Berliner Ensemble. The piece was subsequently adapted
for OU summer schools at York University, part performance, part workshop,
which I undertook for two years.

When
Compass Theatre, under the direction
of Tim Pigott-Smith, decided to mount a 25th Anniversary production
of Peter Shaffer's 'Royal Hunt of the Sun', I was asked to join the
company on its national tour. More interesting even than the work
on the Shaffer, though, was playing Phil Murray in the production
of Trevor Griffiths's 'Comedians' undertaken by a 'company within
the company', directed by Tim's assistant Rob Clare, and rehearsed
and played in prisons.

I
fulfilled a lifetime's ambition by joining the Royal
Shakespeare Company, and regret only that my stay with them
was all too short. I was brought in chiefly to join the cast of Edward
Bond's 'The Great Peace'', the third in his trilogy of War Plays,
undertook small parts in two more of the plays that season, was asked
to stay on for the Barker Season at the Pit, and toured Australia
with the company the following spring in 'Richard the Third' with
Anthony Sher.
